This celebration started in 1984 as our Bi-Centennial get together. The event was so popular, we were asked if it would be an annual event.
In 1985, we asked the Port McNicoll School to run a contest with the kids to give a name to the annual event. The name chosen was “PORTARAMA” and has continued with this name from 1985 to date.
In order to make this annual event successful, volunteer members of the Port McNicoll Lions, Port McNicoll Legion, Branch 545, Be Wab Bon, Port McNicoll Anglers and Hunters, Port McNicoll School, Port McNicoll Seniors, Council, Fire Dept, Hydro and other volunteers plan this event starting in November of each year.
Local merchants support this event through donations, selling of buttons, posting of signs in their business and various other ways they feel they can assist.
Portarama in its history has had a large parade complete with marching bands, floats, Scouting & Guiding Children, fire trucks, antique cars, decorated bikes, dignitaries and other various entries.
In addition to the Parade, other past activities held throughout the weekend have included a spaghetti dinner, Monster Bingo, soap box derby, pancake breakfast and of course a spectacular fireworks display at Patterson Park.
The 2010 Portarama Committee hopes everyone will come out to enjoy the festivities at the 26th Annual Portarama Family Festival. Some returning favorite events like the parade, soapbox derby and spaghetti dinner will be part of the event, along with some new activities such as Best Dressed Pet, Live Entertainment and Family Fun in the Park.
