This celebration started in 1984 as our Bi-Centennial get together. The event was so popular; we were asked if it would be an annual event.
In 1985, we asked the Port McNicoll School to run a contest with the kids to give a name to the annual event. The name chosen was “PORTARAMA” and has continued with this name from 1985 to date.
In order to make this annual event successful, volunteer members of the Port McNicoll Lions, Port McNicoll Legion Branch 545, Port McNicoll Anglers and Hunters, Port McNicoll School, Tay Council and Staff, Fire Dept, Hydro, Tay Community Policing Committee, CERT, Friends of Keewatin, Artisans of Tay, Sacred Heart church and volunteers from other areas of Tay Township. Planning for this event starts as early as November of each year. New volunteers are always needed.
Local merchants and business’s support this event through donations, selling of buttons, posting of signs in their business and various other ways they feel they can assist. Donations are always welcomed.
Portarama in its history has had a large parade complete with marching bands, floats, Scouting & Guiding organizations, fire trucks, antique cars, lawn tractors decorated bikes, dignitaries and other various entries from groups and clubs. Children play a big part in this parade.
In addition to the Parade, other past activities held throughout the weekend have included full coursed dinners, monster bingo, soap box derby, pancake breakfast, carnival activities, artisan shows, horseshoe tournament c/w refreshment tent, children’s play day with bouncy rides and of course a spectacular fireworks display at Patterson Park. Best dressed dog and the dog show will be back by popular demand.
The 2014 Portarama Committee hopes everyone will come out to enjoy the festivities at the 30th Annual Portarama Family Festival. Some returning favourite events like the parade & fireworks will be part of the event, along with some new activities. Live entertainment and family fun in the park with games and bouncy rides will be returning. We promise you will never go hungry throughout the weekend. There will be BBQ’s, bake sales, carnival food fare and treats. The Friends of Keewatin will be adding a new venue this year as well. Another exciting addition will be mini car races for children at the Port McNicoll Community Centre hosted by the Scouts. Start thinking butter tarts because there will be a contest this year at Sacred Heart Church.
So stay tuned for details on all the new and wonderful things coming your way at Portarama 2014 as we celebrate 30 years of family fun!
